About Us

Our Story

Happy Owl Studio was founded by a group of best friends on the sands of Venice Beach  on the eve of the announcement of Apple’s original iPad. We’ve been Apple geeks since our paste-eating days, so we were positively giddy about the possibilities for this "magical and revolutionary" device.

As lifelong Apple devotees, we love all things Apple, but we’ve found it difficult to find protective cases and covers that are chic, useful and affordable. As we waited with eager anticipation for the iPad and devoured every available rumor, hint and leaked photo, we fantasized about a case that would make us truly happy.

We knew we wanted something with high style and serious function. We knew we wanted something we could grab and run out the door comfortable in the knowledge that we have everything we need for the day in one perfect package - and thus, The Wallet and The Clutch were born.

We’ve been getting our kicks making cases for awesome people like you ever since...

Think Happy!

The Founders

Devon Read - Chief Executive Officer

Devon has been a Marine Corps Infantry Sergeant, a member of Apple’s Creatives team, and a visual-effects artist on a number of Hollywood features, including an Oscar winner. He likes beer with his bacon and eggs on Sunday morning and likes to tell the story of the time he had meetings at The White House, The State Department and the Speaker of the House’s office all on the same day. He dreams of the day when his iPad will serve as his personal assistant a la the Knowledge Navigator. He’s been known to drive to San Diego for a burrito from his childhood favorite taco shop and he can’t help but dance when Billy Jean is playing.

Amy Oliveira - Creative Director

Amy is an artist and a storyteller. She started reading W magazine from her bunkbed - when she was barely taller than the magazine. She has worked as a writer and director of theatre and film and she loves words in general and gets twitter-pated over clever uses of alliteration and onomatopoeia. She is a food activist and equal-rights champion and she is so obsessed with interior design that she sometimes dreams about wall-paper. She wishes she was a better skateboarder.

Ryan Jordan - Chief Design Officer

Ryan has spent time as a District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America, managed film and theater productions in Hollywood, worked for the Sundance Film Festival and assisted in research and development for the Marine Physical Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He was also an actor, but we won't hold that against him. His sporadic resume might resemble the 9th subplot of any Eugene Ionesco play, but that's really why we love him. Ryan spends his free time judging sand castle competitions and has curated one of the worlds' most prestigious broken watch collections. He sometimes vagrantly meanders from film festival to film festival looking for pirated copies of films he made in junior high school. Between all that he sometimes finds the time to captain a secret spy ship that travels the oceans saving the world from evil villans.

Meet the Team

Ajay Mantri - E-commerce Manager

While Ajay holds the firm belief that e-commerce design is better than a beach vacation, his farmers tan begs to differ. He enjoys silent movies with a blindfold on and the occasional nap for physical activity. Chances are, if you contact Happy Owl Studio's customer service you will chat with him, which is a good thing because he is the fastest typist on the West Coast. During his free time he likes to compete with Wikipedia to see who knows more.

Nathan Havey - Online Brand & Social Media Manager

Nathan has a background in politics, theatre, and clowning (which he asserts are actually all the same). How that makes him qualified to handle Happy Owl Studio's online brand management and social media, we are not exactly sure, but he does the job fabulously. Nathan fancies himself a "prophet of the pen" writer, and the rest of the Happy Owl Studio team is fine with that as long as they get to "muscle my creative genius" refine his drafts.
